The Western Galilee is a small region in Israel’s north western corner. Encompassing the Mediterranean Coast north of Haifa and stretching inland toward the Upper Galilee. Moving away from Haifa, the Western Galilee region becomes more and more rural moving along the coast, past the ancient Crusader city of Akko toward the northern-most stretch of coastline which consists of largely deserted, tranquil bays. The hills moving inland begin to gain height and provide for beautiful rural communities, leisure and archaeology sites, and amazing scenery.
Places to Visit in the Western Galilee
Akko’s Old City is a Crusader port city recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. A maze of alleyways, this is a far more authentic experience than many archaeological sites in Israel with museums sitting alongside the traditional Arab shuk, and the main museum experience involving walking between the amazing range of activities that are going on as part of daily life.
The Tefen Open Museum is a unique museum set within the Tefen Industrial Park, a unique pioneering industrial setting, which has been replicated both within Israel and around th world. The museum includes sculpture gardens, artwork, a vintage car collection, displays on the Tefen Model, as well as changing internal exhibitions.
Rosh HaNikra, famous for its grottoes at the furthest point north on Israel’s Mediterranean coastline are a series of underground caves which have developed into a tourist site. There is a walking trail through them which is accessed by a cable car, the steepest in the world!
The major attraction of the Western Galilee is, however, its tranquility. The relatively quiet coastline, especially north of Akko and Nahariya is beautifully tranquil and far more dramatic than the popular tourist beaches further south. Beautiful features of nature such as the Keshet Cave (the ‘Rainbow Cave’), as well as the amazing landscapes in a setting which is, by Israeli standards, very sparsely populated with just small towns and agricultural communities lining the hillsides. This area is amazingly green, and is breathtaking for all.
