3.5.2 Upper Galilee & Golan Heights
An enchanting and relaxing place
The Upper Galilee and Golan are a remote region popular with Israeli's escaping for holidays. With everything from skiing to ancient ruins, it is a fascinating region.
Rosh Pina
Rosh Pina is a small town with a rural feel located in the Upper Galilee. The houses in the old town have been restored whilst the main streets has country style accommodation and restaurants.
The Hula Valley
The Hula Valley is a drained swampland centered around a large lake and nature reserve. Whilst you can see fauna and flora of various varieties here, as well as museum displays abuout the area, walking and biking here is magical and fun for all. Bird watching is also very popular here with Israel a major migratory route for birds.
Mount Hermon
Mount Hermon Ski Resort, Israel's only ski resort is in The Golan has 50 days of skiing a year in the winter months as Israel's only ski resort. Whilst not a world-class resort, it is pretty cool to be able to ski less than three hours away from the desert, and attracts almost 300,000 visitors a year. The resort is also open in the summer months and is really popular for its diversity of plant life and magnificent views. The lifts are open all year round.
Metulla
At the foot of the mountain is tranquil Metulla, a village at Israel's set among rolling hills and orchards. The quiet main street is a cool place to stroll, with some historic homes built by the early pioneers who settled the spot, or for more serious walkers, you can hike to the nearby Ayoun waterfalls. The town is full of B&B's, small hotels, and restaurants.
The town's sports center, the Canada Center is the world's largest sports center, with an Olympic size ice skating/ice hockey rink, bowling alley, billiards, swimming pool, firing range, and gym. (04-6950370)
Banias
At the base of Mount Hermon, is the beautiful Banias. A spring which starts at the base of the mountain descends fast, into a major tributary of the Jordan. The waterfall here is one of Israel's most beautiful.
River Jordan
A number of kibbutzim on the Jordan River run centers from where kayaks (more like rubber inflatable rafts) can be hired. The fast currents of the river make this a really enjoyable and cool way to spend an afternoon.
