The first surfboard was brought to Israel by a Californian doctor in the 1950’s. Now, over fifty years on, Israelis have developed into a country of surfers, and as soon as the waves get good, the beaches become dotted with surfers of all abilities.

With so much coastline, Israel is not short of beaches. Here are some of our picks along the Mediterranean and Sea of Galilee coastlines.

The Western Galilee is the far north-west of Israel, roughly the Mediterranean coastline north of Haifa. It offers staggering rocky scenery with remote beaches.

Settlement has been taking place around the Sea of Galilee for thousands of years. Ruins of ancient settlements today stand alongside some of the pioneering and oldest communities established in Israel, including some of the oldest kibbutzim. Active sites sit alongside some important religious and historical ruins.

The ancient Herodian port city of Caesarea has been restored recently to create one of Israel’s most attractive and fascinating archaeological sites. The town also has a stunning beach, a huge art museum, Israel’s only full size golf course, and some of the most impressive houses in the country!

Regarded by some as a suburb to the north of Tel Aviv, Herzliya is a city in its own right. Herzliya Pituach, the coastal neighborhood of this city, is one of Israel’s most exclusive, with ambassadors and industrialists among its residents.

In Tel Aviv, clubs tend not to get busy until midnight, going on until dawn. Make sure you dont arrive too late, though, as it might take a long time to get in!
