4.1 Museums and Galleries

Israel is said to have the highest number of museums per person in the world...but with so many, which one's should you go to?

We at Tourist Israel have gone around and selected to coolest, and most interesting museums and for you to visit. Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in general, host the main national 'institution'-style museums, whilst there are museums of varying sizes and qualities all around the country.

One exhibition, celebrating Israel's 60th anniversary in 2008 is dotted around the country at 6 museums, with each displaying one decade in Israel's history. Pretty cool!

Tel Aviv

From the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the magnificent Eretz Israel Museum, to trendy and quirky galleries, Tel Aviv has museums to satisfy the tastes of all. Small, Quirky and trendy museums can be found around the city including the Bauhaus Museum and Ilana Goor Museum. Tel Aviv has also become a bit of a center for contemporary art, with loads of small galleries.

Jerusalem

The Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, the Israel Museum, and the Tower of David Museum are our picks in Jerusalem.

Mediterranean

The World's only underwater museum is located at Caesarea, where you can dive through the underwater ruins of the ancient city and see the wrecks of numerous vessels. For those who dont want to get wet, the museum on land here, is also really interesting, as is the First Aliyah Museum in nearby Zichron Yaakov. If you are into art, check out the Ralli Museum, a free to enter, huge private collection of South American and Biblical art in Caesarea.
