3.1.4 Jerusalem Culture

Jerusalem might be a fairly traditional place, but cultural activities come in all forms in the city.

Classical Music

Classical music is popular in Jerusalem like in other parts of the country. Check the events page for exact listings of events.

The Jerusalem Centre for the Performing Arts, in the German Colony area of west Jerusalem, serves as the city's unofficial cultural centre and hosts more than 150 orchestral and chamber-music concerts and recitals each year. The Henry Crown Symphony Hall, within it, is the home of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are usually priced NIS100-150.

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is based in Tel Aviv, but does have some concerts in Jerusalem. Visitors to the city may, however, find obtaining tickets for concerts very difficult with the ensemble having almost 30,000 season ticket holders - the largest subscription per capita in the world. Its concerts in Jerusalem are at the Binyanei Ha'oomah.

Theater

Perhaps Jerusalem's trendiest theater is the Khan Theatre, who perform about five plays every season in an innovative way. Although the repertory is divided between plays from Israel and around the world, performances are mainly in Hebrew.

For experimental theater the Habima Theater in Jerusalem focuses on unique productions.

Cinema

The Jerusalem Film Center is the city's trendy venue for arthouse films, hosting the Jerusalem Cinamateque with two auditoriums showing classics, new releases and foreign arthouse films.

Like elsewhere in Israel, most foreign films in are screened in their original language with Hebrew subtitles. Two of the most popular cinemas are Ray Chen in Talpiot, and GG Gil, at the Malha Mall.

Tickets

It is also possible to buy tickets in person from the various box offices if you wish to see live shows.
