Paragliding is becoming one of the most popular extreme sports in Israel and its hard not so see why. With such amazing landscapes below both geographically and historically, seeing the country from a new perspective whilst enduring the thrills of trying something so exciting, makes paragliding an incredible experience. Only in Israel can you leap off the very same mountain on which King Saul fell onto his own sword or follow the very same route taken by Jesus when he leaped off an abyss escaping a lynch mob. See Israel from another perspective.
Mevo Hama in the southern Golan Heights is one of Israel’s most popular paragliding spots. As the sun begins to set in a deep yellow color, the hills across the Sea of Galilee to the west become a silhouette. A group of paragliders who, just a few minutes earlier, would have launched off the edge of the mountain, jumping up into the sky, are now hovering over the 400-meter plateau. As the stare across the beautiful landscape, they know full-well that they are some of the few privileged enough to see as far as the Syrian capital of of Damascus to the east, the fading white Gilad mountains of Jordan to the south and the shadowy, craggy slopes of Galilee to the west.
Paragliding happens across Israel, and on clear days, the skies are dotted with gliders. The main areas for paragliding in Israel vary seasonally. In the summer, popular spots are along the Coastal Plain between Herzliya and Caesarea, in the Lower Galilee around Mount Tabor, and in the Golan Heights. In the winter, paragliders shift south and east, to Mount Gilboa in the Galilee, and to the Negev and Dead Sea.
Mount Tabor is a paragliding mecca, bringing in enthusiasts from around the world. The unique shape of the topography, creates a virtual thermal machine which enables great flights soaring across Mount Tabor Monstery, and east towards the Sea of Galilee, sometimes taking gliders as far as the eastern shore. At Mount Gilboa, another popular take-off site, gliders take off from the side of Mount Shaul at what is known as ‘Saul’s Shoulder’ – where King Saul fell on his sword and died instead of being taken captive by the Philistines.
Because of Israel’s mild climate, paragliding takes place all-year round which gives it a competitive edge and accounts for why many paragliders actually travel to Israel to fly. With a huge range of gliding spots all within close proximity of each other, Israel has taken to gliding, and gliding to Israel, and tourists can experience this as well.
Obviously, due to the nature of paragliding, it is crucial that it is done with knowledgeable and professional instructors who know the terrain and have all the necessary equipment. Flights generally last 20-25 minutes and first-timers fly tandem with their instructor. As an indication, expect to pay about $190 per person.
